ATLANTA, Ga. – Georgia State's women's tennis team picked up right where it left off last fall. On the first day of play at the Duckworth Winter Classic, four Panthers advanced to single flight championship matches, with all three doubles teams advanced to the semifinal rounds to be played Sunday morning.
Senior Linn Timmermann won her opening match against Brianna Thompson (CSU) 6-3, 1-6, 10-4. In the semifinals match, she quickly dispatched the 72nd nationally ranked player Theresa Piontek of Clemson 6-2, 6-1. She will face the 59th nationally ranked player in Fernanda Navarro for the Singles Flight 1 championship Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
Sophomore Kristin Rehse will take on Piontek in the Singles Flight 1 third place match.
Daniela Ramirez found success in her debut for the GSU Panthers. She won 5-7, 7-6, 10-4 in her opening match and will face off against teammate Niri Rasolomalala for third place in Singles Flight 2.
Chiara Volejnicek will face Ally Miller-Krasilnikov (Clemson) in the Singles Flight 3 championship match after winning her first two matches 6-3, 6-3.
Tarani Kamoe will face teammate Lara Vovk in the Singles Flight 4 championship match.
After a first round bye in Doubles Flight 1, the duo of Rasolomalala and Kamoe will begin Sunday at 8:30 a.m. in the semifinals match.
Partners Volejnicek - Ramirez, and Timmerman - Rehse won their opening matches in Doubles Flight 2 and will continue at 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning as well.
