Panthers Split On First Day of GSU Invite

ATLANTA – Hosting the GSU Invitational this weekend, Georgia State's volleyball team split a pair of matches Friday, defeating Grambling State 3-0 before falling to Radford 3-2. The Panthers close out the tournament Saturday vs. DePaul at 1:30 p.m.

Georgia State opened the day versus Grambling State and took care of business, sweeping the Tigers 25-10, 25-12, 25-15. Kristina Stinson led the team in kills with 10 and Kitan Ajanaku was right behind with nine. Ajanaku hit .643 and added two blocks. The Panthers outhit the Tigers .384 to -.049.

In the night cap, the Panthers took on Radford, who swept GSU in 2014. The Panthers played a much better match in this year's edition, but the Highlanders rallied from down 2-1 to steal the win from GSU in Set 5. The final scores from GSU's fifth five-set contest in nine matches were 21-25, 27-25, 19-25, 25-21, 15-12. Deidra Bohannon tied a career high with 27 kills while hitting .262 and added 21 digs. Gabby Serafin played a strong game on defense, tallying 30 digs, a new career high for the senior. Ajanaku had another strong performance, hitting .500 with 15 kills.

Entering the weekend, Sydney Mauer was fifth in the nation in service aces with 17. The sophomore added two more Friday to move into a tie for second.

Georgia State wraps up its home tournament Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against DePaul. The Blue Demons are 7-1 on the year after two wins on Friday against Grambling and Radford.
