BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – Georgia State defeated Gardner-Webb 3-0 Friday in the opening match of the Soccer for a Cure Classic at UAB.
The Panthers (2-2) had a dominant performance, getting off 16 shots to just one for the Runnin' Bulldogs of the Big South Conference on an 84-degree sunny afternoon in Alabama.
In the opening period, Andy Anglade netted his second goal of the season on a pass from Kwaku Adu in the 40th minute to provide a 1-0 halftime advantage.
Senior Eddie Wilding provided a 2-0 margin at 59:21 as he took an assist from Cory Plasker and found the net. Less than 10 minutes later, Tristen Trevino scored his first goal of the season thanks to the assist from Nenad Smiljanic. Trevino became the sixth Panther to score this season to go with six players who have an assist.
Today's winning goalkeeper was sophomore Luke Oesterle in his first start of the year.
Georgia State will face the University of Illinois-Chicago on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET in their second match of the Soccer for a Cure Classic.
