ATLANTA -- Georgia State dropped a Sun Belt Conference doubleheader to UL Lafayette, 10-1 and 3-2, Saturday at the GSU Baseball Complex.
UL Lafayette (12-8, 5-3) won the series, 2-1. Georgia State, which earned a 7-6 win in Friday's opener, is now 14-9 overall, 3-2 in the Sun Belt.
Georgia State trailed 3-1 with two outs in the ninth inning of Game 2 when junior James Clements hit a solo homer, the first of his career, to give the Panthers' hope, but reliever Dylan Moore struck out Trae Sweeting to end the game.
Joey Roach hit his fifth homer of the season with a solo blast in the fourth inning.
Junior right-hander Cole Uvila (0-3) turned in a quality start for the Panthers, allowing three runs on eight hits over 7.1 innings with six strikeouts, but ULL starter Greg Milhorn (1-0) was even better, limiting the Panthers to one run on four hits over seven innings. Moore pitched the final two innings for his second save.
The Ragin' Cajuns also got a strong start in Game 1 as freshman Gunner Leger (3-0) allowed just one run on four hits in seven innings. Georgia State trailed 2-1 after three innings when the Ragin' Cajuns put up four runs in the fourth to take control of the game.
Roach had three hits on the day for the Panthers, while Clements and Caden Bailey added two each. Georgia State played Game 2 without it's top hitter Matt Rose, the NCAA co-leader with eight homers, in Game 2 due to an ankle injury suffered in Game 1.
"I couldn't be happier with the way we pitched and playe defense in Game 2, but as you can see, we struggled to score runs. Anytime you lose a player of Matt Rose's magnitude, that's a big blow to your lineup," head coach Greg Frady said.
"Give credit to Louisiana Lafayette. They played defense and their pitchers pitched very well. That's one of the best teams in our conference; they were picked to win it.
Georgia State hits the road for a doubleheader Tuesday at Alabama A&M, followed by a Sun Belt series at UT Arlington next weekend.
