ATLANTA – Georgia State (4-16, 0-10 SBC) couldn't end the losing streak on Saturday night, falling 3-1 to Appalachian State (17-4, 10-0 SBC) despite strong performances from redshirt senior Kitan Ajanaku and senior Gabby Serafin.
Ajanaku recorded her second double-digit kill performance in as many days, finishing with 14 on .323 hitting. Serafin, who set a career high on Friday with 33 digs, came close to setting a new mark on Saturday, tallying 31 digs against the Mountaineers.
Appalachian State outhit Georgia State .333-.135 in the first set to win 25-18. The Panthers were scrappy, however, trimming the Mountaineer lead down to five twice in the latter part of the set, leading App State to use both timeouts. Jess Keller led the way for App State, tallying seven kills on .308 hitting.
The Panthers and Mountaineers were tied at 8-8 in Set 2 when App State leaped to a 17-10 advantage. Georgia State fought all the way back to lead 24-23 before the Mountaineers went on top 26-25. However, App State couldn't stop Ajanaku as the middle hitter scored three of the final four GSU points to lead the Panthers to a 28-26 win.
App State pulled away in the third set, leading 16-7 after breaking a 4-4 tie. GSU tried to replicate a comeback like the one from the second set, but was unsuccessful and fell 25-13. The Mountaineers sealed the contest with a 25-17 victory in the fourth set to win 3-1.
Georgia State is back at home next weekend as South Alabama and UL Lafayette visit the Sports Arena.
