Georgia State Battles Belmont to Goalless Draw

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After 110 minutes of hard fought action, the Georgia State women's soccer team battled Belmont to a 0-0 double-overtime draw Sunday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn. at E.S. Rose Park. The Panthers are now 0-4-2 this season and the Bruins are 2-1-2 overall.

“Everyone played really well,” head coach Derek Leader said after the draw. “I am very excited by everything that the team showed today after a tough loss on Friday night and I am proud of the players' effort. We have played three games that went into overtime this season and they players have shown great mental toughness. We are a very fit team but I am more impressed by the movement of the ball and the movement off the ball. Now we just have to put the ball in the net.”

Both teams had one scoring chance in the first ten minutes of the match but both attempts were off target.

  • In the 23rd minute, Whitney Ravan fired a shot on goal but Belmont goalkeeper Megan Byrd was there to make the save.
  • Three minutes later Ashley Nagy tested Byrd again but the Bruin keeper made the save to keep the score 0-0.

Belmont forced GSU's Brie Haynes to make her first save of the match in the 28th minute on an attempt by Belicia Mendiola. Haynes was then forced to make another save in the 30th minute on a Rachel Dill's shot.

The Bruins' next chance came in the 40th minute when Tara Austin tested Haynes but the Panther sophomore made the save. Georgia State had one final chance in the 45th minute but Callie O'Connor shot was off target.

  • At the break, the Panthers held a slight shot advantage (8-7) and both teams took two corner kicks.

Both goalkeepers were forced to make two saves in the first 20 minutes of the second half.

  • Belmont went on the attack first in the 52nd minute but Haynes saved Alisson Alcott's attempt.
  • Byrd made her first save of the second half on a shot by GSU's Lauren Harriman in the 57th minute.
  • Three minutes later Ravan tested Byrd but the Bruin keeper was there for her fourth save.
  • Haynes made her second save of the half and fifth of the contest in the 66th minute on a shot by Taylor Smith.

With less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation Rebecca Copeland fired a shot on target for the Panthers but Byrd was there for her fifth save of the match to keep the score 0-0. GSU had one final chance in the 90th minute but Jenna Moore's free kick sailed harmlessly high.

Regulation ended with the match still scoreless and the teams prepared for overtime. Both teams attempted one shot in the first period of extra time but neither was on target. In double overtime, the Panthers had a pair of corner kicks but could not create a quality chance and match ended in a 0-0 draw.

  • Georgia State outshot Belmont 14-13 and took three more corner kicks (7-4).
  • Brie Haynes finished the match with five saves and earned her first shutout of the season.
  • Megan Byrd also recorded five saves in 110 minutes of action.
  • Panthers return to the field on Friday, Sept. 12 to host North Florida. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the GSU Soccer Complex.
