Women's basketball coaches have given a new meaning in basketball for dunking. The craze is sweeping the nation, while raising money for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
The dunk, called #Chillin4Charity, was started in June by Arizona head coach Niya Butts as a video and social media challenge to other Pac-12 coaches to raise money. It has now swept through all conferences and all levels of NCAA play.
The challenge is to have a large canister of ice water poured over your head. If you accept the challenge within 48 hours of the issue and get dunked, the person who challenged you donates $50 to the charity. If you don't get dunked, then you owe $250 to the charity.
When Penn State's staff called out Georgia State in the #Chillin4Charity challenge, the Panther coaches accepted that challenge on Sunday, June 22. Head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener got dunked upon, along with assistant coaches Erin Batth and Katie Pate, plus senior guard Alisha Andrews.
Doing the dunking were four members of the current Georgia State team.
GSU head coach Baldwin-Tener will issue her 48-hour challenges, backed by guaranteed money if they do get dunked, to:
- Mercer head coach Susie Gardner
- Richmond head coach Michael Shafer
- Georgia head coach Andy Landers
- Eastern Kentucky head coach Chrissy Roberts
It all has a Georgia tie from Baldwin-Tener, the former UGA Bulldog player and assistant coach. Gardner is also a former UGA player and assistant coach. Shafter is a former UGA assistant coach and native of Athens. Landers has been the patriarch of UGA basketball for 35 years. Roberts was an assistant for Baldwin-Tener at East Carolina before taking her head job. And, the person who inititated the dunking challenge for charity (Butts) is a native of Americus, Ga. and played at Tennessee.
GSU's assistant coaches will issue challenges ($100 challenge backed by $25 guarantee) to:
- Jenna Burkett at High Point
- Julia Huddleston at Furman
- Nikki West at NC State
- Tiffany Swoffard at Mercer
- Senior player Jazmine Charles at Lenior-Rhyne
GSU player Alisha Andrews challenged two student-athletes to five-hours of community service. If they serve their hours, Andrews will serve two hours each of community service here in Atlanta. Andrews will challenge:
- Bre McDonald at WVU (Lithonia, Ga. native)
- Diamond Henderson at Syracuse (Kennesaw native)
This social media challenge has branched out now and even ESPN's Rece Davis got dunked upon with ice water over the weekend.
On a hot 90-degree day, even that ice-cold bucket of water wasn't too pleasant at first, but for the cause, the GSU coaches gladly withstood the shock.
Director of Basketball Operations Lesley Dickinson was called out later in the week off campus and took a dunking and a chilling bath as well. Watch Hers Here.
