Panthers Fall 9-2 in Series Finale at UALR

Little Rock, Ark. -- Georgia State fell at UALR 9-2 Sunday at Gary Hogan Field as the Trojans won the Sun Belt Conference series, two games to one.

Matt Rose homered for the Panthers (15-18, 4-8 Sun Belt).

UALR (13-16, 3-9) right-hander Cameron Allen (3-2) tossed a complete game, allowing two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts against no walks. First baseman Justin Steelmon drove in five runs on four hits.

The Trojans took a 2-0 lead on single runs in the first and third innings before Rose's homer, a solo shot to left field, put the Panthers on the scoreboard in the fourth inning. It was his fifth homer of the season and pulled GSU within 2-1.

But UALR answered with five runs in the fifth inning to move ahead 7-1 as Steelmon and second baseman Hayden Martin contributed two-run singles.

GSU got one run back in the gottom of the fifth on a Greg Bowder's sacrifice fly that scored  Chris Triplett, who led off with a double, but that was all the Panthers could manage off Allen.

"We had a good game yesterday, and I thought we were ready to play today, but once the game started, nothing was really in sync," GSU head coach Greg Frady said. "We didn't hit the ball well, we did not play good defense, and we're just a step behind, pitching-wise. And then to give them a five-run inning in the middle part of the game, which has been a problem for us, gave them the separation they needed.

"It's really disappointing because when you get an opportunity to win a series on the road, you want to cash in, but we will move forward."

Georgia State returns home to host in-state rival Mercer Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex.
