Panthers Fall at Texas State 8-1

San Marcos, Texas -- Georgia State fell at Texas State 8-1 in the opening game of their Sun Belt Conference series at Bobcat Ballpark.

Texas State (20-17, 9-7 Sun Belt) starter Austen Williams was dominant, allowing just one run on five eights while striking out eight in eight innings to improve to 6-1 on the season.

Sophomore catcher Joey Roach drove in the Panthers' (17-21, 5-11) lone run with an RBI-double in the seventh inning.

Chase Raffield extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a first-inning single, and
Matt Rose had two hits on the day to run his hitting streak to 11 games.

"We faced a really good pitcher tonight, and we had very limited opportunities," GSU head coach Greg Frady said. "There were some things we could have done better, but the reality is that there were very few opportunities, and you have to credit their pitcher. He is one of the league's top guys, he's really good, and it was his night."

Granger Studdard had three hits and two RBI to lead Texas State, and Garrett Mattlage his a solo home run in the first inning off GSU starter Kenny Anderson (3-3).

The series continues with a 4 p.m. ET game Saturday that will be televised on the Sun Belt Network, including CSS in Atlanta. The game will also be available on ESPN3 in markets outside the Sun Belt footprint.

"We will reset and get ready to play tomorrow. We are excited about playing on TV, and we're excited about sending Nathan Bates to the mound," Frady said.
