Panthers Fall 6-4 to UTA, Drop Series

ATLANTA -- Georgia State dropped its second straight game to UT Arlington by a 6-4 margin Sunday at the GSU Baseball Complex as the Mavericks won the Sun Belt Conference series, two games to one.

Freshman Trae Sweeting hit his first home run for the Panthers (17-20, 5-10 Sun Belt) and James Clements drove in two runs.

Trailing 3-0, Georgia State got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning on Sweeting's solo homer over the left field fence.

After UTA (16-20, 8-7 Sun Belt) added three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 6-1 lead, the Panthers got one back in the bottom of the frame on Clements' RBI-groundout.

In the eighth, the Panthers put runners at second and third with one out as Nic Wilson singled up the middle and Matt Rose doubled to left field.

Clements singled to center field to bring home Wilson for his second RBI of the day and sixth of the series. Then freshman Ryan Blanton delivered a pinch-hit single through the right side to score Rose and pull the Panthers within 6-4.

GSU still had the tying run on base with runners at first and second and just one out, but reliever Ty Whidby struck got pop ups from Zach Moon and Sweeting to end the inning.

Sweeting was 3-for-4 on the day with a pair of singles to go along with his home run.

Rose's double extended his hitting streak to 10 games, and Chase Raffield pushed his streak to 11 games with a single in the first inning.

GSU starter Tyler McClure (2-5) allowed five runs on six hits in 5.1 innings, but two of the runs were unearned as the Panthers hurt themselves with four errors.

Georgia State hosts Atlanta-area rival Kennesaw State Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex.
