Panthers Fall to Xavier 16-1 in Series Opener

ATLANTA -- Xavier scored eight runs in the fifth inning en route to a 16-1 victory over Georgia State Friday in the opener of a weekend series at the GSU Baseball Complex.

Georgia State fell to 6-7 on the season, while Xavier improved to 6-4.

The Panthers managed their lone run in the first inning on Nic Wilson's two-out, run-scoring single. That is the only run allowed in three starts this season by Xavier starter Vinny Nittoli (2-0), who gave up just five hits in six innings while striking out seven and walking none.

Xavier answered with four runs in the second. After loading the bases on a double, a single and a two-out walk, Michael Moore pulled a ball down the right field line and over the fence for a grand slam. Moore led Xavier with five RBI on the night.

The Musketeers added a run in the third before breaking the game open in the fifth, using two doubles, three singles, two walks and a hit by pitch to score eight runs off three GSU pitchers and take a 13-1 lead.

Georgia State starter Kenny Anderson (1-1) allowed seven runs on eight hits in four innings to suffer this first loss of the season.

"When you lose like this on Friday night at home, it's very hard to take," GSU head coach Greg Frady said. "This has to be something that we refuse to accept, and we have to fight back harder tomorrow."

"Absolutely credit Xavier. They outplayed us in all three phases of the game. They have a very good team, and we knew they had a very good team, and we also knew we had to play very good baseball to win the game. We did not play good baseball tonight, and they played the way they are capable of playing."

The series continues with a 2 p.m. Saturday and a 1 p.m. contest Sunday.
