Panthers Fall 3-0 at No. 26 Ole Miss

Oxford, Miss. -- Georgia State fell at No. 26 Mississippi 3-0 Friday afternoon at Swayze Field in the opener of a three-game series.

Rebels starter Chris Ellis (2-0) tossed a complete-game, five-hit shutout with five strikeouts and no walks as Ole Miss improved to 5-0 on the season.

Nic Wilson collected two hits for the Panthers (3-2).

"Tonight we got beat by a good pitcher," GSU head coach Greg Frady said. "He consistently threw three pitches for strikes, and he worked ahead in the count. I thought we did a good job of not striking out, but we got very few good pitches to hit. I was happy with a lot of our at-bats, but the reality is, we just ran into a really good guy tonight.

"I thought we pitched well, we played very good defense, and we had some good at-bats. Some things didn't go our way, and we could never get in control of the game because of their starting pitcher."

Neither team managed an extra base hit in the game. The Rebels pushed across two runs in the second inning off Georgia State starter Nathan Bates (0-1) with three singles to take a 2-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, Ole Miss loaded the bases with one out on a pair of singles and a hit by pitch, and Garrett Ford came on to relieve Bates. Ford walked the first batter he faced, Braxton Lee, to bring in the Rebels' third run, but the sophomore lefty then rolled a 6-4-3 double-play ground ball to get out of the jam.

Ford gave up a hit and a walk in the fifth but then retired 10 straight to finish the game.

"We thought Garrett would be a good matchup, and he did a great job," Frady said. "He kept us in the game and gave us a chance, but we just couldn't get anything going offensively."

The series continues with 2:30 p.m. ET games Saturday and Sunday.
