MOBILE, Ala. – Jenna Moore and Whitney Ravan from the Georgia State women's soccer team were named to the 2014 Sun Belt All-Conference second team as voted on by the league coaches, the conference announced at the championship banquet Tuesday night.
"We're thrilled for both Jenna and Whitney,” head coach Derek Leader said. “It is an honor that is well deserved. Now we want to continue our recent momentum in the conference tournament starting with Texas State on Wednesday."
Moore, a native of Roswell, Ga., anchored the Panthers' defense this season and helped GSU record five shutouts. She is rarely beaten in the air and has made countless tackles as the last defender to deny opponents' scoring opportunities. Moore's defensive abilities helped GSU set a school record by not allowing a goal in more than 487 minutes over a six-match stretch.
Moore finished with two points on two assists this season. She picked up her first assist at Kennesaw State when she played a ball over the top to Ashley Nagy, who scored to give GSU the lead. Moore's second assist came on Whitney Ravan's game-winning goal against in-state rival Georgia Southern.
Hailing from Whitewater, Colo., Ravan led the attack this season for Georgia State and was an offensive force in Sun Belt play. She finished tied for first in the Sun Belt statistics with six goals in conference-matches only. Ravan also recorded two assists for a total of 14 points in Sun Belt play, which was tied for second.
Overall, Ravan led Georgia State with 18 points, including a team-high eight goals which that for fifth in the conference standings. She scored the game-tying goal to salvage a draw against UALR and set a career high by finishing with five points against Arkansas State. Ravan scored both goals in the Panthers' 2-0 victory over in-state rival Georgia Southern to earn Sun Belt Offensive-Player-of-the-Week honors.
GSU will battle Texas State in the first match of the Sun Belt Conference Championship at 11 a.m. ET on Wednesday, Nov. 5 in Mobile, Ala. The Panthers defeated the Bobcats 1-0 in the regular-season finale on Oct. 26 in Atlanta behind Kylie Ruffule's first career goal.
- This is Ravan's second all-conference honor after being selected to the 2012 All-CAA third team.
- Last season Ashley Nagy was named to the All-Sun Belt Conference first team.
- The Panthers were defeated by eventual tournament champions South Alabama in the quarterfinals of last year's Sun Belt Conference Championship.
