MOBILE, Ala.-R.J. Hunter scored 30 points, hitting five 3-pointers and going a school-record 13-of-13 from the free throw line to lead Georgia State to a 73-63 victory over South Alabama at the Mitchell Center Saturday evening.
Georgia State (9-6, 2-0 Sun Belt) won for the sixth-straight time and seventh time in the last eight games. The six-game streak is tied for the eighth-longest streak in program history and is the longest since the Panthers won a school-record 11 games during the 2011-12 season.
Hunter finished 6-of-12 from the floor and 5-of-9 from 3-point range, pulling down five rebounds. The sophomore has scored 20 or more in each of the last four games, including a 41-point performance at UTSA just two weeks ago.
Seniors Devonta White and Manny Atkins each added 14 points. White went 5-of-7 from the floor and hit a pair of 3-pointers, while Atkins hit a pair of 3s and pulled down four rebounds.
Augustine Rubit led South Alabama (6-9, 0-2 Sun Belt) with a double-double of 11 points and 14 rebounds, while Ken Williams knocked down five 3-pointers to score 19 points for the Jaguars.
“I challenged our team after what I considered a poor performance on Thursday night,” head coach Ron Hunter said. “I thought that tonight from the start, we had great intensity. That is the type of intensity you need every night to win in this league.
“We did all of the little things that you need to do to win. We didn't turn the ball over in the second half, we shot the ball great from the free throw line and stepped up and got stops when we needed to.”
Georgia State finished the game 24-of-26 (92.3-percent) from the free throw line and finished the game 9-of-20 from 3-point range. After five first half turnovers, the Panthers did not turn it over in the second half. GSU entered the game second in the NCAA turning the ball over just 8.8 times per game.
South Alabama took an early 7-1 lead before Georgia State responded with an 11-5 run of its own to tie the score at 12.
Both teams took advantage of the free throw line in the opening period. Georgia State hit 9-of-10, while South Alabama made 12-of-15.
Georgia State extended its lead to eight with just under two minutes to play as Hunter knocked down five 3-pointers in the first half, while White made a pair and scored 10 points in the first 20 minutes.
South Alabama finished the first half on a 5-0 to cut the Panthers lead to 39-36.
Georgia State opened the second half on a 7-0 run and pushed its lead to 11, 48-37, with 17:29 to play.
A Williams 3-pointer for South Alabama with 2:43 to play cut the Panthers lead to seven, but that was as close as the home team would get as the Panthers scored five-straight to push it back to 12.
Devonta White played in his 100th-career game, making his 83rd start, the fifth most in program history.
Senior Denny Burguillos came off the bench for GSU to play 13 minutes and went 3-of-4 from the line after missing the last few games for personal reasons.
Georgia State held South Alabama to just 31.4-percent shooting and 7-of-27 from 3-point range.
Georgia State will travel to face Western Kentucky in a battle of 2-0 teams on Thursday at 8 p.m. The game will air live on ESPN3.
