Panthers Return to Road at Southern Miss Saturday

ATLANTA-Georgia State will return to the road for the seventh time in eight games traveling to Hattiesburg, Miss., on Saturday to face Southern Miss in Reed Green Coliseum at 4 p.m. ET. The Panthers will be looking to avenge a two-point loss at home to the Golden Eagles last season.

Saturday's contest can be heard live on 1340 the Fan 3, with Dave Cohen, now in his 31st year as the Voice of the Panthers, being joined by 680 the Fan's Brandon Leak. Live statistics will be available at GeorgiaStateSports.com.

Georgia State (3-5) snapped a four-game losing streak on Wednesday night with a 71-54 victory against Young Harris. The Panthers shot 62.2-percent from the floor, the best mark under head coach Ron Hunter in two-plus seasons and tied for the eighth-best mark in school history.

Redshirt-junior Curtis Washington scored a career-high 17 points for the second time in three games to lead the Panthers. In the one game that he did not score 17 points, he pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds.

For the season, Washington is averaging 10.9 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.9 blocked shots per game. He is fifth in the Sun Belt in rebounding and first in blocked shots per game. He is also shooting 64.9-percent from the floor, second in the league.

“After barely seeing any action on the court during the last three years, Curtis has come into this season fully prepared like a veteran player,” Hunter said. “He has given us a dominating presence in the paint and is continuing to get better.

“Going into Wednesday night's game, the confidence-level on our team was low, there was no debating it. I thought we played well and I could see our confidence level return to where it should be. We moved the ball around well and got it inside for some easy baskets. As long as we continue to work on what we need to, our program will get where it needs to be in March.”

Senior Devonta White added 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting against Young Harris. He moved ahead of Jim Jacobs (1965-69) on Wednesday for 13th-place on the all-time scoring list and now 1,073 career points, just one-point behind Lamont McIntosh for 12th.

White is averaging 9.1 points per game, 30th in the Sun Belt and 3.3 assists per contest, the 11th-best conference mark. He is shooting 80.0-percent from the line, the eighth-best mark in the conference.

White is one of six Panthers shooting at least 75-percent from the charity stripe.

Feeling a little under the weather, redshirt-junior Ryan Harrow's streak of 20-plus point games game to an end on Wednesday. Harrow had scored 20 or more points five times in the first seven games. The Kentucky-transfer is averaging 18.1 points per game, seventh in the Sun Belt. He is also dishing out a team-high 4.1 assists per game, fourth-best in the league.

The Panthers are averaging 77.2 points per game, fifth in the Sun Belt and are also among the top-five in free throw percentage, field goal percentage and 3-pointers made.

Offensively, GSU is shooting 47.3 percent from the floor and 34.6 percent from 3-point range, making 72.6 percent from the free throw line, second in the league. The Panthers are tops in the conference in blocked shots (5.5), turnover margin (+3.4) and assist/turnover ratio (1.3).

R.J. Hunter is second on the team in scoring averaging 15.4 points per game, 11th in the Sun Belt. The sophomore is fourth in the conference averaging 2.4 3-pointers per game and fifth in free throw percentage, knocking down 87.5 percent from the line.

Redshirt-senior Manny Atkins rounds out the starting five, averaging 9.9 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. One of the top 3-point shooters in the Sun Belt, Atkins is making 46.9-percent from 3-point range and knocking down 1.9 3s per game, both among the top-10 in the conference.

Southern Miss (7-1) comes in following a victory over Morehead State on Wednesday. Neil Watson leads the Golden Eagles in scoring, averaging 10.9 points and 3.5 assists per game. Southern Miss is averaging 69.5 points per game while holding its opponents to just 61.5 per contest.

The Golden Eagles only loss came last week to the defending national champions, Louisville, which snapped Southern Miss' six-game winning streak.

Following Saturday's game, Georgia State will take the week off before facing former conference-foe Old Dominion in the Sports Arena on Dec. 14 at 2 p.m.

Quick Notes

• Georgia State and Southern Miss will meet for the ninth time on Saturday, but just the third time since 1982. Last season, Southern Miss earned a 69-67 victory in Atlanta. R.J. Hunter scored 24 points for the Panthers, but Jerrold Brooks answered with a career-high 23 for the Golden Eagles, including the go-ahead three-pointer with 2:03 left in the game.

• Georgia State will play on the road for the seventh time in eight games Saturday and still have two remaining non-conference games on the road before conference play opens in January.

• The 34 points scored by Ryan Harrow against Elon were the most since R.J. Hunter scored 38 points against Old Dominion on Feb. 2, 2012. Harrow scored the most points in the country that day, Nov. 26, and it is the second most points in the Sun Belt this year.

• Redshirt-junior Curtis Washington has scored a career-high 17 points in two of his last three games. In the game he didn't score 17, he recorded a career-high 14 points.

• Following a 27-point effort against Vanderbilt, Ryan Harrow earned Sun Belt Conference Player-of-the-Week honors, becoming the first Panther to be recognized by the league.

• Thru eight games, the Panthers have had a player score 20 or more points seven times. Redshirt-junior Ryan Harrow has accomplished the feat five times, including three straight before Wednesday night, while sophomore R.J. Hunter has accomplished the feat twice.

• Coach Hunter has made it a habit of playing in non-conference tournaments and this year was no different. In his first year, the Panthers travelled to Seattle, Wash. to play in the World Vision Classic. Last year, the Panthers hosted Coaches vs. Cancer following an opening game at BYU. This year, Georgia State participated in the NIT Season Tip-off. It was announced earlier in November that the Panthers will play in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic next year.

• Georgia State won 15 games last year, giving head coach Ron Hunter's 37 victories in his first two seasons, the most by a Panther coach in two years in program history. He surpassed the total of Hall of Fame coach Charles “Lefty” Driesell who won 33 games in his first two seasons. Driesell won 50 games in his first three seasons and with two wins so far this season, Hunter is at 40 in his two-plus years.

• This will mark the Panthers first season in its return to the Sun Belt Conference. GSU was a founding member of the league in 1976 before leaving in 1981.

• Expectations are high entering the season as ESPN, NBC Sports, USA Today and CBS Sports have all projected the Panthers to win the Sun Belt Conference this year. The Sun Belt coaches have the Panthers finishing tied for fourth.

R.J. Hunter, a Kyle Macy Freshman All-America honoree last season, opened the year with 27 points against Southern Poly. In 39 career games, Hunter has scored 20 points or more 14 times, including the first two games this year.

• Senior Devonta White scored his 1,000th career point in his last game last season and with 73 points scored this year, has 1,073 for his career to move into 13th on the Panthers' all-time scoring list. He needs 443 points during his senior season to establish a new career school record. More remarkable is the fact he missed 10 games as a freshman with an ankle injury.

• White will finish his career at Georgia State has one of the most accomplished Panthers in program history. He is currently listed or just outside the top-10 in 11 career statistically categories. For more information on the records White is chasing can be found on page six of this notes packet.

• Freshman Isaiah Dennis has already made noise this fall earning the No. 5 play on ESPN Sportscenter's Top 10 List on Oct. 19. The 5-11 guard dunked over 6-9 forward Curtis Washington during the inaugural Hoop Day Fanfest.

• Georgia State will have one of the most balanced rosters in the country this year. The squad features four seniors, four juniors, four sophomores and three freshmen.
