Volleyball Loses to Arkansas State in Four

ATLANTA - After taking the first set against Arkansas State, the Georgia State volleyball team lost the next three to the Redwolves.

The win snapped a six-game losing streak for A-State, while GSU has now lost three straight.

Arkansas State (12-19, 7-9) used a strong hitting attack to overpower the Panthers (9-20, 4-11) 22-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-16. The Redwolves hit .242 to the Panthers' .134. A-State's Kendal Davis led all scorer with 18 kills. The Redwolves had three players with double-digit kills. 

Sophomore Eliza Zachary led the Panthers with 15 kills, while sophomore Dede Bohannon had 12. Junior Andrea' Ezell and sophmore Sydney Hunsley both had seven kills apiece. 

Defensively, both teams had 11 total team blocks. For GSU, Ezell had one solo block and six block assists. Emily Averbeck added 22 more kills to her career total, putting her just nine shy of two school records. 

In the first the set, the Panthers started to pull away after a 16-16 tie. The Redwolves managed to get within two at 23-21, but Georgia State won two of the next three points on Bohannon and Ezell kills. 

Again in the second set, the two teams found themselves tied at 16-16. Arkansas State found itself up 23-20, before three straight points from the Panthers tied it at 23-23. A-State responded with two kills to take the set 25-23. 

The next two sets were all Arkansas State. The Redwolves pulled away early in both sets and the Panthers were unable to catch up. A-State won those two sets by margins of 11 and nine points, respectively. 

Georgia State has three matches left in its regular season and is still vying for a spot in the Sun Belt conference championship. On Wednesday, the Panthers will visit the top team in the Sun Belt, Western Kentucky. They will then return home to face South Alabama and Troy, the two teams closest to GSU in the Sun Belt standings.

Georgia State will face off with Western Kentucky at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Bowling Green, Ky.
