ATLANTA - Despite a third set comeback, the Georgia State volleyball team fell in four sets to UALR at home Friday night.
The Trojans (20-7, 12-3 Sun Belt) defeated the Panthers (9-19, 4-10) 25-20, 25-16, 13-25 and 20-25 to keep their 11-match road win streak alive.
The Trojan duo of Edina Begic and Sonja Milanovic each had 19 kills apiece, while the team hit .271 overall. For the Panthers, sophomore Dede Bohannon was the only GSU player to have double digit kills. Bohanoon had 20, while the next highest was seven from sophomore Eliza Zachary. Georgia State hit .190 for the match.
Defensively, GSU had 9.5 blocks. Both Bohannon and Zachary had solo blocks, while junior Andrea' Ezell had five block assists. Senior Emily Averbeck racked up 22 digs, putting her 31 digs away from breaking two school records - most digs all-time at GSU and most digs in a season.
UALR jumped out small but constant lead early in the first set. The Trojans never allowed the Panthers to get closer than two points after taking a 6-4 lead. GSU did pull within three at 20-23, but UALR won the next two to take the first set.
The second set was all UALR. The Trojans pulled away after an 8-8 tie and never looked back.
The third set saw GSU kick it into high gear. After tying 6-6, GSU went on an impressive 18-7 run to close out the set. The team hit .414 in the third set, while Bohannon laid down six kills. GSU also had three of their five service aces in that span.
UALR began the fourth set on a 7-2 run before Georgia State won five straight points to tie it at 7-7. UALR then answered a four-point streak of its own before taking a 24-17 lead. The Panthers fought off three straight match points, but fell in the fourth set 20-25.
The Panthers won't have much time to rest as Arkansas State visits Atlanta Saturday night. GSU is looking for revenge after losing 3-2 on the road to the Redwolves. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. in the GSU Sports Arena.
