INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The GSU volleyball team dropped both matches of Saturday's double-header at the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational Saturday. IUPUI and North Texas each topped GSU 3-0. With the losses, GSU fell to 1-5 on the season.
Freshman Eliza Zachary was named to the All-Tournament team.
North Texas topped GSU 3-0 with the Mean Green taking the first set 25-14, the second set by a 25-18 margin, and the third set 25-17.
Junior Loren Byerly and freshman Zachary each posted seven kills in the match while senior Jamiee Freeman and freshman Sydney Hunsley each added six kills. Natalia Nieto finished the day with 34 assits as she added 15 against North Texas to go with her 19 dishes against IUPUI. Freshman setter Andrea' DeLeon added 11 assists against North Texas to finish the day with 28.
Freeman and junior Emily Averbeck each posted 10 digs in the loss while Andrea Ezell added a solo block and a block assist.
Freshman Nieto posted a double-double with 10 digs and 19 assists but it was not enough as IUPUI handed the Georgia State volleyball team a 3-0 loss.
Freshmen led the way for GSU offensively with Dede Bohannon posting 10 kills. Syndey Hunsley was second on the team in scoring against IUPUI with eight kills and fellow rookie Zachary finished with six kills and led the team with three solo blocks and six block assists.
DeLeon had a strong showing as well as she earned 17 assists.
The Panthers kept it close with IUPUI winning the first set 25-21 and the second frame 25-22. GSU forced a tough battle in the final set with the Jaguars finally holding off the Panthers 26-24.
GSU will be back in action Tuesday as the Panthers travel to UAB for an 8 p.m. showdown.
GSU opens the home portion of the 2012 schedule as the Panthers host Samford in the annual GSU Invitational Friday, September 7 at 7 p.m. at the GSU Sports Arena.
