Panthers Fall in Five Sets to Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. – The Georgia State volleyball team (10-8, SBC 1-6) went the distance in a thrilling five-set battle but came up just short, falling 3-2 to Old Dominion (4-14, SBC 1-6) Friday night at the ODU Volleyball Center.

The Panthers' offense was led by Nazli Guvener, who powered the attack with 16 kills and a strong .278 hitting percentage. Maria Cecilia de Pinho and Alessia Cappai each added 10 kills, fueling a balanced Georgia State offense. On the defensive end, Hady Pickard anchored the back row with 13 digs, while Shanelle Martinez followed closely with 11.

How It Happened

Set 1 | The Panthers dropped a tight first set, losing 29-27 in a game that was tied 14 times and had eight lead changes.

Set 2 | Georgia State responded with a 25-20 victory in set two, evening the match at one set apiece. The Panthers never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 11-10 in a set that showcased two lead changes before the Panthers took over the lead. The Panthers racked up 18 kills in the frame.

Set 3 | Old Dominion answered back in set three, seizing control early and keeping Georgia State on its heels. The Panthers dropped the opening point and were unable to reclaim momentum, ultimately falling 25-21 to give the Monarchs a 2-1 match lead.

Set 4 | Georgia State battled back in set four, earning a 25-21 victory to force a decisive fifth frame. In a tightly contested set featuring eight ties and five lead changes, the Panthers pulled ahead for good at 15-14. The offensive surge was fueled by a dominant attack, as 17 of the team's 25 points came off kills.

Set 5 | Georgia State came up short in a back-and-forth match, dropping the set 15-9.
