Monmouth 81, Tennessee State 70

 

ATLANTA--Andrew Nicholas scored 19 points to lead four players in double figures as Monmouth defeated Tennessee State, 81-70, on the final day of the Coaches vs. Cancer Atlanta Subregional, played at the GSU Sports Arena.

Monmouth went 2-1 in the three-day event to even its record at 3-3 on the season. Tennessee State fell to 1-5, despite outrebounding the Hawks, 46-24.

Kellen Thornton led the Tigers with 27 points and 16 rebounds. TSU shot 44 percent from the field but hit just 2-for-18 from three-point range. Meanwhile, Monmouth made nine treys and went 22-for-29 from the free throw line.

Dion Nesmith scored 13 points for the Hawks, and Jesse Steele and Marcus Ware added 12 points each off the bench.

Monmouth ended the first half on an 11-1 run to take a 38-31 lead into the locker room. The Hawks scored the first four points of the second half to build an 11-point cushion, and Tennessee State got no closer than five points the rest of the way.
