Monmouth 73, South Alabama 71

 

ATLANTA - Jesse Steele made three free throws with 1.3 seconds remaining to lift Monmouth to a 73-71 victory over South Alabama Tuesday in the first game of day two of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic Atlanta Subregional, played at the Georgia State Sports Arena.

Augustine Rubit, who finished with 20 points and 16 rebounds for South Alabama (2-2), had given the Jaguars a 71-70 lead when he made a pair of foul shots with six seconds to play. After a timeout, Steele fired a shot from the top of the key, and Antoine Allen was whistled for the foul. 

Steele, with 11 points and eight assists, was one of four double-figure scorers for Monmouth (2-3). Andrew Nicholas led the Hawks with 15 points, Marcus Ware scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds off the bench, and Dion Nesmith added 12 points.
