ATLANTA – The GSU volleyball team made a run in the third
set but it was not enough as conference rival Delaware used an early lead to
hand Georgia State a 3-1 loss. With the loss, GSU fell to 4-19 overall and 2-9
in the Colonial Athletic Association while UD improved to 13-13 overall and 7-3
in the conference.
Eliza Zachary led GSU with 12 kills and was one of three
Panthers to post double-digits in scoring as fellow rookie Dede Bohannon posted
11 kills and senior Jamiee Freeman earned 10. UD's Chelsae Lawrence led all
scorers with 15 kills.
Natalia Nieto posted 36 assists for the Panthers while
Freeman and junior Emily Averbeck each earned 21 digs on the night.
The Blue Hens took the first set 25-19 and the second set
25-18 but the Panthers stormed back in set three.
Zachary and Bohannon each posted four kills in the third set
while sophomore Andrea Book earned three kills in the third set. Nieto and
freshman Sydney Hunsley each added a pair of kills to help the Panthers earn a
25-21 set win.
However, the Blue Hens were up to the task in the fourth
frame as they took the set 25-13.
The Panthers return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. to host
Towson in the final match of the season. Freeman will be honored prior to
Sunday's match in the annual senior day ceremony.
