BOONE, N.C. —The Georgia State volleyball team (13-9, SBC 4-7) took down the Appalachian State Mountaineers (13-9, SBC 4-7) in five sets Friday on the road at Holmes Convocation Center.
The Panthers were led by a double-double from Alessia Cappai, who registered 19 kills and 14 digs on the day. Maria Cecilia De Pinho also added 13 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Marta Lazzarin chipped in for with 20 digs to go with six blocks from De Pinho.
How It Happened
SET 1 | Georgia State opened strong, outlasting Appalachian State in a thrilling first set, 31-29 The stanza featured nine ties and five lead changes before the Panthers pulled ahead. The front row anchored the win with four key blocks, while Georgia State capitalized on 13 Mountaineer attacking erros to take the early edge.
SET 2 | Building off their momentum, the Panthers edged App State again in a tight 25-23 second set to move within striking distance of a sweep. In a frame that saw nine ties and two lead changes, neither team led by more than four points, but Georgia State's poise down the stretch proved the difference.
SET 3 | Appalachian State fought back in the third, jumping ahead from the first serve and never relinquishing control. Georgia State couldn't find its rhythm, dropping the set 25–19 as the Mountaineers extended the match.
SET 4 | The Mountaineers carried their momentum into the fourth, taking the set 25-15 to even the match at two apiece. Georgia State trailed by as many as 10 points and couldn't recover after App State grabbed the lead for good at 6–5, despite three early ties.
SET 5 | With the match on the line, the Panthers responded with composure, sealing the victory in a 15–13 fifth-set battle. Georgia State struck first and never trailed, building a 10–5 lead before holding off a late Mountaineer push. The front row stood tall again, posting five blocks to help close out the five-set thriller.
