ATLANTA – Senior Jamiee Freeman led the way with a
double-double as the Georgia State volleyball team posted a 3-2 win over conference
rival UNCW Saturday afternoon.
With the win GSU improved to 3-14 overall and 1-4 in the
Colonial Athletic Association. UNCW fell to 7-14 overall and 0-6 in the
conference with the loss.
“The girls had a never say die attitude today,” said head
coach Tami Audia. “They knew that when it gets to the fifth set you throw
everything out the window and play hard.”
Freeman posted 14 kills and led the team with 25 digs to
earn a double-double. Freshman Dede Bohannon led the Panthers and was second
overall in scoring with 19 kills on the day. Freshman Eliza Zachary earned 15
kills and had a big defensive performance with seven block assists and two solo
blocks.
“Jamiee (Freeman) struggled a little in the first set but
she did an unbelievable job of being a true attacker for us,” said Audia. “I'm
really proud of her.”
The freshmen tandem of Andrea' DeLeon and Natalia Nieto each
posted 31 assists while junior Emily Averbeck was second in digs with 23.
The Seahawks edged GSU 26-24 in the first set but the
Panthers rallied in the second set. Andrea Ezell got a late kill to tie the
score at 24-24. Zachary put GSU on top 27-26 and an error by UNCW gave the
Panthers a 28-26 win in the second period.
UNCW won the third set 25-22 but GSU was able to hold off a
late Seahawks' rally in the fourth set to earn a 26-24 win and tie the match at
2-2.
The Panthers controlled the fifth and final set and
back-to-back kills by Freeman and Bohannon gave GSU the set 15-8 and the match
3-2.
“The thing we can do tonight is celebrate the win but we
need to focus on William & Mary tomorrow,” said Audia. “We have to make
sure that we rest and get ready to play tomorrow.”
The Panthers return to action Sunday as they host William
& Mary. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
