GSU wraps up Southern Shootout

Conyers, Ga.--The Georgia State women's tennis team wrapped up a successful weekend at the Southern Shootout hosted at the Rockdale Tennis Center in Conyers, Ga., with several victories on Sunday.

Sophomore Abigail Tere-Apisah and junior Whitney Byrd capped undefeated weeks with singles victories on Sunday. Tere-Apisah recorded a 6-1, 6-1, win over South Alabama's Alina Vollman in the No. 1 singles slot. No. 3 singles player Byrd knocked off Ramona Ghermani of South Alabama 6-3, 6-3.

"It was a good weekend of tennis and a good challenge for the players," GSU head coach Miha Lisac said. "We did some things well and improved in singles throughout the weekend."

Tere-Apisah teamed with sophomore Maryna Kozachenko to record an 8-1 doubles victory over Jacksonville's Aline Staudt and Gabriela Bartos. Byrd joined senior Kir Kemp to defeat Jacksonville's Natalia Melibeu and Harjit Gosal, 8-6.

Kozachenko added a win by default in her No. 2 singles matchup against South Alabama's Chane Hines on Sunday.

Samford won the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles flights for the week while South Alabama won at No. 2. GSU took the No. 1 and No. 3 singles while Samford's Madelie van Rensberg won at No. 2 and South Alabama's Mary Angela Martin, Mariya Krachok and Veronika Kalougina won the fourth, fifth and sixth singles' flights respectively.

"We pride ourselves on playing well in doubles," Lisac said, "We will continue to work on getting better overall in doubles and mentally tougher in singles."

The Panthers return to the Rockdale Tennis Center on Oct. 7 when they host the Atlanta Classic. Matches begin at 9 a.m. on Friday and last throughout the weekend.
