Head Coach Bill Curry
On game...
The real story of the game is seated to my left and right (Bo Schlechter and Donald Russell).
Our coaches started to see some things upstairs. We made certain adjustments that started to give us some angles and frankly, we got Donald in the game and he started to make some plays and we got some turnovers... I think the turnovers were the biggest difference in the game.
On run defense...
The run defense against their run offense was pretty good. We do have more athletic people defensively (than last year), our linebackers and our secondary run a lot faster than they did a year ago.
On Schlechter...
We had a quaterback who had never played a college game at quarterback and we had zero turnovers. If I knew that in my fondest dreams, I would have struggled to believe it.
(Bo) has the capacity to run away from people and run through people as well as throw the ball and that's a big thing.
On Donald Russell...
We had terrific backs before but Donald makes a difference when he handles the ball and you saw that tonight. He has the capacity and the physicality to punish tacklers and spin away and run away from some others. That's a gift and a lot of great backs have that. We have high hopes for him."
On ODU...
"We're really happy but we'll be back at work at 6 o'clock in the morning on the next one because the next one (ODU) is a substantial part of our future. Last year they taught us some lessons up at their place and we're going to have to work really hard to get ready for them."
#12 Sophomore Quarterback Bo Schlechter:
On his performance...
"This was my first college start, but I tried to come out confident. After getting some plays run, I was able to build up some confidence going into the second quarter."
On the team's offensive adjustments...
"We started switching some things up when we noticed that they weren't going with our motion. So we figured that we'd start running to that side. We made some adjustments at halftime and started running more heavily to that side."
#20 Junior Running Back Donald Russell:
On the difference he brings to the team... "I believe that my style is more downhill running. I was taught at my previous school just to get the yards you can get. Those three or four yards are enough. I have more of a downhill style of running. A lot of my teammates have started to follow me and use that style of running."
#2 Sophomore Wide Receiver Albert Wilson:
On the start of the season...
"We've been waiting for this moment for a long time. We had a great camp this summer. We were all anxious to see how Bo [Schlechter] would play. He showed up and played well. The first quarter started off slow, but we just had to get started. Once the train got rolling, it just kept going."
#10 Sophomore Outside Linebacker Robert Ferguson:
On the start of the season...
"Being back in the Dome was a joy. We worked so hard all summer to prepare for this game and we came out and did what we had to do."
On his second quarter interception...
"My defensive back D'Mario Gunn told me to watch the flat route and I did what he told me. I trusted my teammate. Then I got the interception. I wish I could have run it back for a touchdown, but I was kind of tired."
Clark Atlanta University Head Coach - Daryl McNeill
Opening statement:
"I thought it was a great first half. We did some things we thought we could do, but two interceptions, two turnovers turned into big plays for them. Then the third touchdown for them, I thought the personal foul at the end gave them an extra push the score up to 21-3. If you saw the game, you wouldn't think it was as bad as the score was."
"It was a great game statistically for both teams. If we would have done some things differently, we would have been in great shape."
On CAU positives in the game:
"We saw a lot of positives in the game. You are talking about a team that has done a lot of good things in the past. One big positive that I love was that Rashad Lewis, freshman tailback, showing flashes of a Winston Thomas, and that was a great thing. We have a lot of positives and feel pretty good about it. Coach Curry even commented after the game that he thought we have a championship team if we stay together."
On CAU defensive game plan:
"Well, actually, three of our defensive starters weren't even playing in our safety position today. If those guys are there, GSU doesn't get the big plays, especially on a missed tackle on their first touchdown because our freshman safety missed the tackle. We had to put corners at safety for this game, but they will be back next week. Defensively, it was a great game for us."
