Former Georgia State player Maxine Farmer (1982-85) was inducted into the Florida Community Colleges Hall of Fame in March during the conference's basketball tournament in Marianna, Fla.
Farmer, who just finished coaching her 29-1 girls' team at Vanguard High in Ocala, Fla., into the state final four, starred at Pensacola Junior College before coming to Georgia State.
“This is the biggest honor I've ever received,” Farmer told the Ocala Star-Banner newspaper. “I was excited and truly blessed that my children Kessermarie and Brandon were able to be there with me, as well as my mother.”
As a player, Farmer was exceptional. She was all-state and a 1,000-point scorer at Vanguard High, was that school's first player to receive a college scholarship and her photo still hangs above the gym floor. She starred at Pensacola Junior College, earning all-conference and all-state honors with the Lady Pirates.
At Georgia State, Farmer scored 1,009 points in her two seasons and is still second in school record books for career scoring average (18.3 per game). Farmer led the 1983-84 GSU team in scoring (536 points, 18.5). As the team MVP, she also won the Signal Newspaper's Sports Award and was the outstanding female athlete.
Farmer is amazingly busy, working her full-time job as a case manager at The Center mental health facility, while also serving as the head coach at Vanguard High. She earned her master's degree in management leadership and is pursuing a doctorate degree in management.
Along the way, Farmer worked at the City of Ocala Parks & Recreation, as a coach at Shores Christian Academy and a coach at Central Florida Community College.
Farmer's son, Brandon, graduates this spring and also became a 1,000-point scorer on the basketball team at Vanguard.
