ATLANTA – The Georgia State women's basketball team (9-13, 4-6 SBC) received a 26-point performance from its bench, but came up short in a 69-61 loss to the Arkansas State Red Wolves (19-4, 10-1 SBC) on Thursday afternoon at the GSU Convocation Center.
Ari Dyson led the Panthers with nine points and six rebounds, while Crystal Henderson finished with 10 points. Cheyenne Holloman added five points and three steals for Georgia State.
Dyson was a force on the offensive glass, pulling down four offensive rebounds as part of a 17-rebound effort that fueled 14 second-chance points for the Panthers. Defensively, Georgia State limited Arkansas State to just 21.9 percent shooting from three-point range.
How It Happened
After an early 2-2 tie, Georgia State used a 7-0 run midway through the first quarter to take a 9-2 lead with 8:27 remaining. The Panthers carried that momentum through the opening period, entering the first break ahead 23-15. Georgia State dominated the paint in the quarter, scoring 14 of its 23 points near the basket.
The Panthers were unable to sustain the lead in the second quarter, as Arkansas State surged ahead to send Georgia State into halftime trailing 41-30.
Arkansas State extended its advantage after the break, building a 51-37 lead before Georgia State responded with a 5-0 run highlighted by a three from Eghosa Obasuyi, cutting the deficit to 51-42 with 2:56 left in the third. The Red Wolves answered once again, taking a 60-45 lead into the fourth quarter. Georgia State knocked down two three-pointers in the frame, accounting for six of its 15 points.
Georgia State opened the final period with a 5-0 run to pull within 60-50 with 5:35 remaining. The Panthers continued to chip away, scoring 10 of their 16 fourth-quarter points in the paint, but Arkansas State held on down the stretch to secure the 69-61 victory.
