Hempstead, N.Y.- Muki Kangwa posted her eighth double-double of the season to lead the Georgia State volleyball team (9-12, 3-1 CAA) to a Colonial Athletic Association win Friday night over Hofstra, 3-1 (25-22, 25-15, 23-25, 25-20), at the Mack Physical Education Center.
Kangwa led the Panther attack with 17 kills and tossed in 12 digs, while Vineece Verdun added 13 kills, hitting .400 for the contest. GSU dropped Hofstra to 2-2 in CAA play, 11-10 overall.
Georgia State reaches 3-1 in league play for the second straight season, having entered the night in a four-way tie for second place in the conference.
Senior Chelsea Perry had 41 assists from the setter position, her highest output of the year.
The Panthers spotted the Pride a 10-5 lead in the first set, but rallied throughout the frame and tied things at 19 on a kill by Perry. GSU would later claim a 23-20 advantage on a spike from Kangwa and earn the set victory, 25-22, on a service error by Hofstra.
Georgia State jumped out to a 14-8 lead in the second set as Andrea Noe drilled a service ace, her sixth of the year. GSU later extended the advantage to eight as Kangwa served an ace of her own, making it 21-13 to keep the Panthers in control. GSU only extended its lead down the stretch, taking the second set 25-15 after a kill from Verdun and a series of Pride errors.
In the third, the Panthers spotted the Pride a 13-8 lead to open the set. Noe brought GSU to within four at 17-13 after a kill, then Verdun cut the deficit to 21-19 on a spike. Andrea Book brought GSU to a 22-22 tie, but the Panthers eventually fell, 25-23.
The Panthers went ahead 9-5 in the fourth set, forcing the Pride into a timeout after a kill from Book. GSU then built a six-point advantage and stayed in control through much of the set. A Pride attack error made it 22-17 GSU and later Noe gave the Panthers a match point at 24-19. After Hofstra staved off one match point, Verdun slammed down her 13th kill for a 25-20 win that clinched the victory.
