Women's Tennis Starts Strong on Day One at Alabama

Grgan Paces Panthers at Roberta Alison Classic

Tuscaloosa, Ala.--The Georgia State women's tennis team finished up a successful tournament at the 24th Roberta Alison Fall Classic hosted by the University of Alabama on Saturday.

Freshman Masa Grgan highlighted the team's effort by posting a perfect 3-0 singles record in the flight seven bracket. After posting two singles victories yesterday, Grgan finished off Mississippi's State Petra Ferancova 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday to complete her undefeated weekend.

Grgan teamed with junior Whitney Byrd in the doubles competition to post a solid showing against stiff competition. Grgan and Byrd dropped the opening match of the day to MTSU's Flavia Nagayama and Yuiri Nomoto 8-5, but battled back strong to finish off with a victory in the afternoon. The duo posted an 8-2 win over Mississippi's Iris Verboven and Paige Keating to close the tournament.

Senior Kir Kemp narrowly missed her chance to defend her singles title from a year ago at the Roberta Alison Classic, dropping a close 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 match to Auburn's Taylor Cohen. The top-seeded Kemp finished the tournament with a 2-1 singles record.

Byrd battled UAB's Rachel Daniell tough but lost a close 6-2, 3-6, 10-8 match to on Saturday.

Head coach Miha Lisac leads the Panthers to the ITA Regionals hosted by the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla. next week. Play begins on Friday, Oct. 21 and continues until the following Monday, Oct. 24. Check back on www.GeorgiaStateSports.com for a preview of GSU's final fall tournament before the spring season.
