Women Race Past Hofstra, 84-70, for CAA win

ATLANTA (Jan. 9) - Georgia State women's basketball team ran past Hofstra, the league's top scoring team, 84-70, in a Colonial Athletic Association game Sunday at the GSU Sports Arena.

The Panthers, an up-tempo team that has now won 17 straight when scoring 70 or more points, traded baskets with the CAA's highest-scoring team, Hofstra, that averages 77.1 a game this year.

In a see-saw game that included 16 lead changes and five ties, Hofstra re-claimed its final lead of the game at 68-66 with 6:11 left on a three-point basket from Nicole Capurso. GSU's Lanajia Earnest made two free throws to tie the game at 4:57 and then Kendra Long hit her fifth trey of the game at 4:36 to give GSU a lead at 71-68 that it would never lose.

GSU outscored Hofstra 18-2 over the final six minutes. The Panthers made 9-of-12 free throws in the final two minutes of the game as they held a 73-68 lead heading into those final two minutes.

Five Panthers scored in double figures for GSU (6-8, 1-2). Senior forward Angelique Burtts came back after missing the last two games with an ankle sprain, and scored 18 points to go with 11 rebounds. Dependable junior forward Chan Harris was stellar with her seventh double-double game of 14 points, 15 rebounds, 8 blocked shots and 5 assists. Kendra Long drained 5-of-9 three-point shots to add 17 points and 9 rebounds. Tiffany Anderson added 17 points and nine rebounds, while Lanajia Ernest hit 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch to finish with her 10 points.

GSU's defense blocked 14 shots and had a 49-48 rebound advantage.

Hofstra (9-5, 1-2) had four players score in double figures. Anma Onyeuku had 14 points, Candice Bellocchio added 13 and Shante Evans had 12 points and 8 rebounds.

Visiting Hofstra started strong today with some early treys to open a 10-point lead at 20-10 seven minutes into the contest. GSU closed back to 26-20 at 9:31 and eventually tied the game at 37 with 3:11 to go in the first half. Hofstra took a 44-43 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the up-tempo teams traded baskets and were tied with 10 minutes to play at 59-59. The largest lead of the second half by either team was three points by GSU until the closing four minutes of the game when the host Panthers went on their run.

GSU shot 53% in the first half and 47.5% for the game. Hofstra got off 81 shots today, but made just 26 for a 32.1% rate. The Pride was just 9-of-34 in the second half at 26.5%.

"I think because Hofstra presses and plays aggressive that we became more aggressive today," said Coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener. "Getting Angelique back was certainly a plus for us, but this was a pure team win with everyone giving plenty of contributions. I think we played hard and played to win today and it showed in the result."

This was Coach Baldwin-Tener's first CAA win and 201st of her 11-year career as a head coach.

Georgia State stays home to host CAA rival Old Dominion on Thursday evening.
