Lead changes, drama, record time and a photo finish. The Great Atlanta Baby Race II had it all Saturday at the GSU Sports Arena.
Haven Abilgail Golphin blazed off the line on one side and Maxwell Preston Powers was lightning out of the blocks on the other side of the starting line. Powers, 15 months, was in the lead when he realized, hey I can make better time if I get up and walk, so he got up on two legs and walked on to the finish line. Oops, that won't work. Sorry.
Haven, 9 months, continued her quest with a huge lead on the field, setting a blistering pace. Just when she got within an arm's length of mom and the finish line, Haven opted to sit down and look back at the rest of the field. Wasn't it Hall of Fame pitcher Satchel Paige who always said, "Don't look back, someone might be gaining on you."
Well, while Haven looked back, alert Caleb William Conarroe, 10 months, made his steady, but sure crawl to the tape. Haven got the drift again and turned to finish, but by two diaper lengths, Caleb touched the finish line first.
Thanks to Haven's rabbit-like pace, Caleb set a new Baby Race record with a time of 1 minute, 45 seconds, destroying last year's inaugural winning time of 4 minutes, 02 seconds.
Racing in front of a cheering crowd and TV cameras caused some rookie jitters for some of the contestants, who never really accepted the challenge of racing down the court and leaving the safety of a family member.
But, prizes were awarded and happy memories and friendships were made. And, you know it is a big event when the winning trophy is bigger than the contestant.
