Fairfax, Va (Jan. 2) - Georgia State committed 28 turnovers and host George Mason converted them into 28 points in moving to a 71-47 win in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams on Sunday.

Georgia State had six turnovers before it had its first point of the game and fell behind 7-0 in the first four minutes. GSU finally made two free throws, but then Mason went on another 8-0 streak to make it 15-2 with 13:17 left in the first half.

Mason had its largest lead of the first half at 26-7 before GSU closed to 34-23 at the halftime.

GSU closed to nine points with the first basket of the second half and it was 37-27 with 18:23 to play. But, Mason went on a 17-2 run as the cold-shooting Panthers struggled and it was 54-29 with 9:45 to play.

Georgia State (5-7) compounded its turnovers with poor shooting that was 25.8 percent in the second half and 27.5 percent for the game. Junior forward Chan Harris led GSU with 11 points and 11 rebounds, but she shot just 2-for-12 and had six turnovers. Sophomore guard Tiffany Anderson added 11 points and seven rebounds. Second-leading scorer Angelique Burtts left the game in the first half with an ankle injury and did not score today or return to the game.

Mason (7-5) improved to 6-1 at home as the Patriots knocked down 8-of-15 three-point shots and 15-of-18 free throws in winning its fifth straight game. Mason got 19 points from Ashleigh Braxton with five-of-seven treys to go with 10 points and seven assists from Brittany Poindexter.

"This is not the kind of effort and focus I expect, so we will continue to stress fundamentals and discipline in practice to get better," said Coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener.

Georgia State will travel to Philadelphia on Thursday to face Drexel in their second CAA game.
