GSU Sweeps UNCW, 3-0, in CAA Opener

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- In the CAA opener for both teams, the Georgia State volleyball team swept UNC Wilmington, 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-21)  in Wilmington, N.C. The Panthers improve to 7-7 (1-0 CAA), while the Seahawks fall to 5-9 (0-1 CAA).

GSU improves to 12-2 all-time against UNCW, including winning 12 of the last 13 contests. The Panthers have also beaten the Seahawks two straight seasons to open CAA play.

Senior Audrey Cantrell inched closer to the GSU all-time digs record on Saturday with 10 more to up her total to 1,382, good for second place, 246 away from the all-time record held by Christen Garcia (2003-06).

Leading the way in the win for GSU was senior Ashley Jones, who had 12 kills. Junior setter Chelsea Perry had 32 assists. The Panther defense limited UNCW to just a .143 team attack percentage, while GSU had a 64% side-out percentage for the match.

The Panthers of Coach Tami Audia led the way from the get go, as the match featured only seven tie scores and three lead changes.

Set one saw the Panthers go on a 9-4 run to end the set after a back and forth set saw GSU holding a 16-15 lead.

GSU led set two from the beginning in route to a 25-18 victory.

A block by redshirt junior Vineece Verdun closed out the match as the Panthers took set three, 25-21.

The Panthers return to action Tuesday with a trip to face Troy in Alabama.
