Georgia State head coach Bill Curry previews Saturday's game against Jacksonville State at his weekly press conference:

Opening Comments...

"One of the very best things about football when you have a horrific performance is that you get to play again very soon. We are excited to get back on the field and we were excited to get back on the practice field and correct the things that were so obviously lacking in our last performance.

"We are playing a team this week that is on a roll. They have the longest winning streak on the road in FCS football. The thing that stands out the most to me will not be noticed by very many people though. In their first two games, their fourth quarter scoring is 35-3. They are dominant in the fourth quarter, even against an SEC team and against an established FCS team. UTC played extremely well and played JSU about as well as anybody has in a long time. It was a very emotional day as UTC opened up their new expansion. They were there to steal the show and almost did it. JSU has had two emotional wins in a row and are playing with 19 starters that are either juniors or seniors. They are all good players.

"When I was an NFL scout many years ago, one place I was sent early on was Jacksonville State because they have a lot of NFL prospects. This team is no exception. They are six for seven when scoring touchdowns in the redzone. That is stunning considering they were up against an SEC defense that was desperate to stop them. Also, both their quarterbacks threw a touchdown pass and two point conversion in the fourth quarter and in overtime at Ole Miss. It doesn't matter who they put in, they will have a poised competitor at the quarterback spot. Having said all that, even though they are on a roll it is going to be incredibly difficult to play an emotional game three weeks in a row. Jack Crowe is a great football coach, but it gives us an opportunity if we play our best, which we haven't done this year, we have a chance to compete and win the game.

"We have to come out and play defense the way we did for long stretches last week. We have to play offense the way we did for some of the first week. We are capable of better. We have not played to our talent level yet. We can't be young anymore and in fact we aren't that young. We have got transfer players that have played college football before. Other programs have started new programs and have been able to win right away. We expect to as well. We are excited about getting to play somebody of Jacksonville State's stature. We say that we love to play football and we will play anybody, anywhere, anytime and Jacksonville State is one of those football teams that we are excited to play. All those statistics were about them, but the statistic that must change for us right away is time of possession. It was so horrific last week and I'm not sure I've experienced a game where the opposition had the ball 42 minutes. We know what happened and I believe our team would have handled it better if we had better prepared. This is a process, but we expect to win while we are in the process."

On the team's preparation in practice in comparison to last week's...

"We had a long practice this morning and the guys came out with the right attitude Sunday as well as today. They understand and they are embarrassed. They should be. We want to redeem ourselves. You do it on the practice field. You don't do it with your mouth. You do it with your shoulder pads and bending your knees and throwing it to the right place and running hard and tackling and all the things that you are supposed to do."

Game's impact on recruiting ...

"High school guys are really impacted by game scores. We would like to be able to recruit the kind of guys that Jacksonville State has been doing out of our state for years. This score will mean a lot in that regard."

On whether a win would already solidify the program...

"Our program is solidified. We have got good coaches and good players and we are going to be a good football team. We would just like for it to happen now. We have 105 players, a veteran coaching staff and a mixture of young people that know what they are doing. No single victory is going to define us. What we have got to do is establish strings of things. We have got to get strings of victories, runs, recruiting over the long haul and semesters where we improve academically where it is consistent progress. When we got here, we didn't have anything to measure so we just picked things and said that we have to get at least two percent better at this or that. Now we have very tangible goals where we can build a program in the long haul. The basics for us to be a good program are in place though. We are solidified, but we have to do it on the field as well. I wish one win would establish things like that, but it just means you have got to win the next one."

On applying things that JSU does well to GSU's program...

"We had this unusual punt formation that we worked months and months to research and put together. We watched Jacksonville State and they have the same system. We don't know quite how that happened, so we will have to change that some so that we are not predictable to them. We do watch them and see that they do some things extremely well. They emphasize coverages that we have not and that I think we could. They also do things on the offensive side of the ball. The fact that they use both their quarterbacks down the stretch really impresses me. They have a veteran quarterback in Marques Ivory and then a true freshman, Coty Blanchard. They are doing a great coaching job. There are things we can learn. Every time you play a quality opponent you learn some things."

On bouncing back from a loss...

"You don't really learn much from the times when things are going well. Everybody tells you how wonderful you are. If you believe it, then your comeuppance will happen quickly. I think I pushed so hard that I actually hurt our team though. We didn't get the job done preparing for that game so you go through the adversity where you will walk past people and they won't tell you how good you are anymore. The contrast is stark. It is a life lesson. You realize we are not doing this for the outside though. We don't care about the crowd size or where we play. We just play, wherever we are. You don't learn that until you get kicked in the teeth and somebody embarrasses you in front of your home crowd."

On what he liked about last week...

"We fought back. The way we were pushed around in the first half, we were fortunate that the score was not higher than it was. The defense fought hard all night long. We had guys that played 71 snaps on defense. That's a lot of snaps. We found a way to get the football back and take the lead. It was then though that our immaturity surfaced again. There was a feeling on the bench that was, 'OK, we have got them now.' I went up and down the bench doing my very best to get everybody's attention that we don't have them and we have to finish the job and score again. That didn't happen. Next time, we will know that that is not enough. You have got to catch them and finish them."

On the problems with stopping the run...

"It is a matter of defeating the blockers and tackling the backs. It is as simple as that. It means lining up in the right place, not getting panicky and missing alignments. Those other coaches are smart coaches and took advantage of the way we lined up. That has to stop. It is about tackling, nailing down your specific responsibility and who has field and option responsibility. Offenses today are so sophisticated that you can't stop one or two things and stop an offense. Everybody spreads the whole field. Jacksonville State actually has a hybrid offense that is enviable. They actually have three different offenses. We watched them against people like Florida State a year ago and against Ole Miss. They are competitive against ACC and SEC teams."

On whether he misses traveling around and covering college football...

"I told the men this morning that we all go through difficult times with the loss of family and friends. I happen to be in that situation today, but I woke up excited because I knew I was going to see my guys. I'd much rather be doing this than anything else. I could not be happier."

Defensive Back Brandon Jones

On what practice was like this morning as compared to last week...

"Everybody came out this morning with their mind focused and ready to prepare for Jacksonville State. A lot of the coaches made a big emphasis on wrapping up on our tackles on defense. A lot of guys made sure they knew their assignments. That is exactly what we need to do."

On how to establish leadership after a loss...

"In practice, we come out and play a little harder. We try to get everybody focused. We actually try to find things where we want to push our freshmen into a predicament that would seem unusual, but let them know that this is what is going to happen and that you have got to step up in that situation when it comes down to it. We upperclassmen try to make sure that the younger classmen are prepared for them."

On whether the loss was needed to help the team grow...

"Definitely. We are a first year program, but like Coach said, we are established. One victory does not settle everything. We have to do it continuously. We have to be the team that everybody wants us to be. It hurts your soul when you lose the game. A lot of guys said that we don't want to have this feeling anymore. A lot of guys at practice came out and said that we can't let this happen again."

On the biggest challenge for the defense against JSU...

"We have to come out and stop the run. That is the biggest part. Trying to get their offense one dimensional. If we can get them in long passing situations then we can cause some turnovers and cause big plays."

On whether he has played on TV before...

"Yes I have. I actually played against Furman my redshirt freshman year at [Mars Hills]. It was on CSS. We don't think about television though, we think about playing."
