ATLANTA - The Georgia State baseball team extended its winning streak to five games on Monday afternoon with a 13-6 win over UNC Asheville at The Field at Panthersville. Redshirt-junior Brett Maxwell and redshirt-sophomore Joey Wood led the Panthers will four hits apiece.
Georgia State improved to 5-6 on the season, while UNC Asheville dropped to 4-6. State is 5-1 on its current seven-game home stand which will conclude on Tuesday.
Maxwell finished the game 4-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored, raising his batting average to .606 on the season.
Wood went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, scoring two runs and driving in another. Wood is now batting .609 thru 11 games.
"I think the team wants to win right now," commented head coach Greg Frady. "The team is just playing so well. I guess the best way I can describe it is that the team is doing whatever is asked of them. They are giving their very best to put us in a position to win. I think we are very hungry to win after we did not get off to the start of the season that we wanted."
The Panthers got on the board quickly with two runs in the first. Wood singled to left center, scoring junior Mark Micowski who had led off the game with a single to left. Senior Bradley Logan followed with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Maxwell to give State a two-run lead.
Junior Rob Lind followed in the bottom of the second with a solo home run to left field, his first in a Panther uniform as State went ahead 3-0.
State added three more runs in the bottom of the third to go ahead 6-0. Junior Ryan Fleming doubled down the left field line, scoring Wood again. Lind followed with a single to left, scoring Logan and Fleming.
The Bulldogs got back in the game with one in the top of the fifth and four in the top of the sixth, capped by Justin Schumer's two-run home run, cutting the deficit to 6-5.
Georgia State starter Ryan Moore (1-1) was relieved by Will Campbell in the top of the sixth. Moore went 5.1 innings, allowing six hits and four runs, three of which were earned. He struck out three to earn his first win of the season.
The Panthers quickly rebounded with four of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
The Panthers used three straight bunt singles by Micowski, Maxwell and Wood to load the bases for Logan. The Augusta native doubled down the left field line, scoring Maxwell and Wood.
Wood and Logan each later scored to give State at 10-5 lead. The Panthers would add one more on in the seventh and two in the eighth, while the Bulldogs would score once in the top of the eighth.
UNC Asheville starter Grier Harrington (0-1) took the loss for the Bulldogs. Harrington lasted 3.0 innings, allowing nine hits and six runs, all of which were earned. He struck out four in the loss.
Junior Will Campbell pitched the final 3.2 innings to record his first save of the season for the Panthers. He allowed just three hits and two runs, neither of which were earned, while striking out four.
Senior Bradley Logan continued his hot play at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs.
Junior Rob Lind added his first home run in a Panther uniform, going 2-for-4 at the plate, while senior Carl Moniz collected another two-hit game, raising his batting average to .378.
The two teams will conclude the brief two-game series on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
