ATLANTA - Junior Mark Micowski had a record-setting day, hitting for the cycle and breaking two school records as the Georgia State baseball team's bats awoke for a 32-3 win over North Carolina Central on Friday night at The Field at Panthersville.
Georgia State's 32- run output broke the school record of 22 that was tied last season against Florida A&M in Tallahassee on March 10th. The Panthers also set new records for hits, at bats, doubles and runs batted in for one game.
"What feels so great about winning this game tonight is that it was our first win of the season and I feel as though our entire team contributed," commented head coach Greg Frady. "There were so many smiles and so much relief on so many faces. Tonight, we got the result that we wanted."
The win improved the Panthers to 1-6, while North Carolina Central dropped to 0-5 on the young season.
State set a new record with 28 hits, breaking the school record of 26. The nine doubles in the game broke the record of eight, while the team also set a record with 29 runs batted in. The team also established a new at bats record with 56.
Micowski set a new school record with eight at bats, as well as seven hits, breaking the mark of five shared by several former Panthers. Micowski finished hitting for the cycle in the fourth inning as the Panthers batted around in two innings before that inning was complete.
"Mark had a very special night at the plate," stated Frady. "Any time you get seven hits, it is impressive. The fact that Mark did a good job of being disciplined at the plate and hitting the ball to the opposite field was really the most impressive thing."
The Eagles scored in the top of the first, before Georgia State batted around in the bottom half of the inning, scoring eight times to take an 8-1 lead. State scored in every inning except the fifth, en route to the victory. The Panthers scored seven times in the bottom of the third, as well as seven times again in the bottom of the eighth.
In addition to Micowski's special day at the plate, several Panthers shined in the win.
Senior Carl Moniz finished 5-of-7 at the plate, with four runs scored and four RBIs, raising his batting average over 220 points. The team as a whole raised its batting average over 60 points on the evening.
Senior Bradley Logan belted his third home run of the season, all of which have come in the last four games. Logan finished the evening 4-of-6 at the plate with four runs scored and three RBI. He has hit eight home runs in his last 12 games dating back to last year.
Junior Ryan Fleming collected a pair of hits, scoring three times and driving in four.
Junior Carter Sackett got out of an early season slump, going 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored.
Redshirt-junior Joey Wood also scored three times, while sophomore Brandon Williams drove in three runs.
Lost in the impressive hitting performance was a solid outing by starting pitcher David Buchanan (1-1) who made his second start in a Panther uniform.
Buchanan pitched 5.1 innings, scattering five hits, while striking out 10 for the victory.
Freshman Michael Moch pitched the final 3.2 innings, allowing just two hits for his first career save.
Eagle starter Drew Robinson (0-2) was credited with the loss, lasting only 1/3 of an inning, giving up seven runs.
Blake Murray led the Eagles with a pair of hits, scoring once and driving in a run.
The two teams will return to the field on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
