ATLANTA – Georgia State University Athletics mourns the unexpected passing of former baseball standout and 2009 MLB Draft pick Anderson Chase Childers, who died Sunday, July 13 at the age of 38.
As a devoted husband and father, Childers displayed extraordinary courage and selflessness in his last moments. In a heroic act, he saved a family of five in a moment of crisis in Pawleys Island, S.C. on Sunday afternoon, putting their lives above his own. Tragically, this act of heroism resulted in him ultimately paying the highest sacrifice by giving his own life in the service of others. His bravery, kindness and love will always be remembered.
A Nashville, Tenn. native, Childers made his mark at North Cobb Christian School in Kennesaw, Georgia, earning All-Region honors three times and All-State recognition during his junior and senior seasons. He also helped the Eagles to a state championship in 2003.
At Georgia State, Childers quickly became one of the best all-around statistical four-year players in Panther history. He Finished his career at Georgia State as the all-time leader in walks (120) and second in sacrifice hits (28). He also finished his four-year stint tied for second on the all-time games played list with 214, as well as tied for fourth with 716 at bats...Tied for sixth on the all-time hits list with 209, Childers was one of only nine players in Georgia State history with over 200 hits at the time.
Following his standout college career, Childers was selected in the 2009 MLB Draft by the Baltimore Orioles. He continued his baseball journey in the minor leagues, including stints with Rookie and Gulf Coast affiliates from 2009–10, culminating with the Bluefield Orioles in 2010, where he remained a steady presence in the lineup.
