ATLANTA - The Georgia State baseball team continued its offensive surge at the plate, belting 26 hits en route to a 27-3 win over Alabama State on Tuesday afternoon at The Field at Panthersville. Junior Jonathan Kolowich and sophomore Daniel Blaustein each had five hits for the Panthers.
Georgia State has won 11 of its last 14 games to improve to 11-9 on the season. Alabama State dropped to 4-4 with the loss.
"I really thought we had a purpose going into these two midweek games," commented head coach Greg Frady. "We wanted to use a lot of personnel on our team, both defensively and pitching wise to tune-up for conference play. I had the opportunity to rest some guys who had been playing a lot and allow others to get a start. I think it shows the strength and depth of the team when you can play like this and those who played today did a great job."
Blaustein had a career day, going 5-for-6 at the plate with four runs scored and six RBIs, along with his first collegiate home run, a grand slam over the center field wall in the first inning.
Kolowich was equally impressive, going 5-for-6 at the plate with three runs scored and six RBIs, belting his third home run of the season.
Junior Jeremy Gazerro (2-1) earned his second win of the season, pitching 4.0 innings and allowing just two hits and two unearned runs in the shortened seven-inning game. Gazerro stuck out a career-high seven in his first start in a Panther uniform.
The Panthers bats came alive early, as the Hornets were never in the game. Georgia State batted around in both the first and second innings, scoring 11 runs in the bottom of the first and six in the bottom of the second. State finished the game scoring in every inning.
Senior Carl Moniz led-off for the first time this year and went 3-for-4 at the plate with five runs scored and two RBIs.
Redshirt-sophomore Joey Wood went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs, raising his batting average to .492 on the season. He belted his seventh home run of the season which is tied for the team lead.
Junior Ryan Fleming added three hits, along with four runs and four RBIs, including his seventh home run of the season.
Junior Bryan Condotta also had a career game, belting his first home run of the season, going 3-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored and three RBIs.
Sophomore Brandon Williams added a pair of hits, while junior Aaron Schmitz scored a pair of runs.
Freshman Michael Moch, along with juniors Zach Chastain and Charley Olson each pitched one inning of relief. The trio combined to allow just three hits over the final three.
The Panthers chased Alabama State starter Corey Washington after just one inning. Washington allowed 10 hits and 11 runs, while walking one.
