GSU Falls to Delaware, 3-1; Concludes Best Season Since 2005

NEWARK, Del. -- The Georgia State volleyball team saw its CAA Tournament hopes fall just short on Saturday night as the Panthers fell to the Delaware Blue Hens, 3-1 (18-25, 25-13, 25-20, 25-12) on Senior Night in Newark, Del.

The Panthers end the year at 14-14, 8-6 in the CAA. The eight victories is the most for GSU in conference play since 2005. GSU also finished the year in sixth place in the CAA after being picked to finish last in the preseason poll.

The game also marked the career finale for four GSU volleyball student-athletes. Seniors Rachel BorycAudrey CantrellAshley Jones and Raquel Jones all saw their final action in Panther blue and white on Saturday night.  

Cantrell ended her career second on the all-time digs list in GSU history with 1,592, just 36 from the all-time mark. A. Jones finishes her career third in total attacks with 3,311 and sixth in kills with 1,087.

"This was a tough weekend for our team and it hurts now because we were so close to the CAAs," said head coach Tami Audia. "But this was a special season. We came together as a team and fought to the end for a berth in the CAAs. The future of Georgia State volleyball is bright and I can't wait for next season."

The Panthers came out fighting in the first set, winning 25-18. GSU trailed early in the set, but rebounded to take control of the set and gain a five-point lead at 22-17. A Verdun kill and block by Verdun and setter Chelsea Perry gave GSU the early 1-0 lead.

Delaware quickly rebounded to dispatch GSU 25-13, 25-20 and 25-12 in the final three sets to claim the victory. The Blue Hens hit .336 for the contest, while limiting GSU to a .152 hitting percentage.

Verdun led the way for GSU with a 14 kill, seven dig performance, while hitting .500. Muki Kangwa produced 10 kills, while Perry had 39 assists. Cantrell finished her career with 14 digs.  

The Blue Hens end the regular season at 24-5 and 13-1 in the CAA and will be the No. 1 seed and host for next weekend's CAA Championship.
