TOWSON, Md. -- The Georgia State volleyball team fell to the Towson Tigers on Friday night, 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-20), in CAA volleyball action.
The Panthers (14-13, 8-5 CAA) face a must-win situation tomorrow against the CAA's No. 1 team Delaware Blue Hens. GSU handed the Blue Hens their only CAA lose of the year earlier this season at the Sports Arena, 3-2. The Panthers must win Saturday's match and hope for a James Madison loss to Hofstra to make the CAA Championship. Towson improves to 15-15 and 3-10 in the CAA.
The loss snaps GSU's four-match win streak.
Redshirt-junior Vineece Verdun led the way for the Panthers with 11 kills while hitting .391. Redshirt-senior Audrey Cantrell had 15 digs. Towson was paced by three double-digit kill efforts. Amanda Halls (10 kills), Katy Buck (11 kills) and Alysha McCreary (10 kills) all performed well against GSU. The Tigers limited the Panthers to a .129 hitting percentage, while hitting .284 themselves. Neither team blocked well only tallying five apiece. Twenty ties and seven lead changes occurred during the match, but 15 of the ties were during the first set.
The first set proved to be the closest with each team battling back and forth. The Panthers last led in the set at 18-17, but could not hold on. Trailing 24-22, a Verdun kill pulled GSU to within one with freshman Emily Averbeck coming up to serve. However, a Halls' serve gave the Tigers the first set victory.
Towson claimed sets two and three, 25-18 and 25-20, to close out the match.
GSU meets up with Delaware tomorrow at 7 p.m. and will be scoreboard watching the James Madison match. With a win and JMU loss, the Panthers would make the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2005. The match against the Blue Hens will be available via live stats on GeorgiaStateSports.com.
