Panthers Fall at Old Dominion

Norfolk, Va.-Georgia State fell at Old Dominion, 56-40, in Colonial Athletic Association basketball Thursday at the Constant Center in Norfolk, Va.

Joe Dukes and Trae Goldston scored 11 points each for GSU, but the Panthers fell to 9-13, 3-7 in the CAA. Old Dominion won its eighth straight game and its 19th straight at home to improve to 17-5, 9-1 CAA and remain in a tie for first place in the CAA.

Gerald Lee, the preseason CAA Player of the Year, led ODU with 16 points, and Ben Finney added 12 points and nine boards. The much taller Monarchs outrebounded Georgia State, 40-23, and GSU managed to shoot just 35 percent from the field.

The Monarchs opened a 31-18 lead at the half. The Panthers managed to pull within seven points with eight minutes to go but could get no closer.

"To hold Old Dominion to 56 points is a very good effort, but you've got to make shots on the road," said GSU head coach Rod Barnes. "We missed some easy shots, and that hurt our confidence. We were able to cut it to seven, but then we missed some opportunities.

"Give Old Dominion credit, they're a very good basketball team, especially at home. They're big and they're deep, and their size hurt us."

Georgia State's point total is its lowest since a 46-38 loss to Utah in 2003-04.

Georgia State plays its third straight road game Saturday at VCU, with an 8 p.m. tip for the regionally-televised game (CSS).
