ATLANTA-The first football game in Georgia State history will be played one year from today as the Panthers host Shorter on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010 at the Georgia Dome in their inaugural game.
That contest kicks off a 10-game slate, including six home dates at the Georgia Dome, as announced by Georgia State President Dr. Mark Becker, Director of Athletics Cheryl L. Levick and head coach Bill Curry at Wednesday's "Countdown to Touchdown" press conference and pep rally at the Georgia State Student Center.
After debuting against Shorter, Georgia State's next game will also be at home on Saturday, Sept. 18 against Jacksonville State. Other home dates include Morehead State (Oct. 2), Savannah State (Oct. 9), North Carolina Central (Oct. 16), and Lambuth (Nov. 13).
Georgia State's first road game will be at Campbell on Sept. 25 in Buies Creek, N.C. The Panthers will also play at Old Dominion (Oct 23) and at South Alabama (Oct. 30) before concluding their inaugural season with a Nov. 20 trip to Alabama.
"It's hard to believe that we will be running onto the field at the Georgia Dome one year from today," said Curry. "And it will get here before we know it.
"Roughly a third of the games we should be able to compete in....another third of them are going to be demanding...another third of the games are going to be really hard, and then there's a monster at the end. We didn't anticipate having the monster in the first year but that was the only date we could get with those guys from Tuscaloosa and we didn't want to turn our back on a chance to play against them.
"I don't think there is a perfect order to the schedule but no schedule is perfect unless you have a great football team and we aren't there yet."
The Panthers will compete as an independent in 2010 and 2011 before joining CAA Football in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) for the 2012 season.
