Women upset at Mason, 63-59

FAIRFAX, VA (Feb. 8) ? George Mason used the support of its 3,073 fans to upset Georgia State, 63-59, Sunday afternoon in CAA action at the Patriot Center.

Georgia State (11-11, 3-8) struggled with 30 percent shooting (21-of-69) and 19 turnovers in falling to the Patriots. Crystal Johnson paced State with 12 points, followed by 11 from Jylisa Williams. Chandra Harris had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Danyiell McKeller returned from a month's absence with a knee injury to add nine points and eight rebounds.

George Mason (3-19, 1-10) was paced by 14 points each from guards Brittany Poindexter and Brittany Eley. Inside, Eugenia Broadus led with 14 rebound and seven points.

Down 10 points at halftime, Georgia State closed to two points at 34-32 with 16:43, at 42-40. The Panthers were still within three points at 58-55 with 3:50 and 60-57 with 2:05 left, but could never make the plays to gain a tie or the lead. Broadus' layup with 27 seconds as the shot clock was about to go off was the final dagger in Mason' win.

“The kids all understand they have to be accountable for their mistakes, correct them and move on,” Coach Lea Henry said. “It was a disappointing loss, but I think we'll be fine once McKeller gets back stronger and we get that team chemistry back we had earlier this year.”

Georgia State held a 48-42 rebound advantage with 22 offensive rebounds today, but kept missing from right under the basket. The Panthers had just 11 steals, below their season average that ranks in the top 10 in the nation.

The Panthers will move on to play CAA rival Northeastern in a Thursday night game in Boston.

Notebook: Brittany Hollins made her 100th consecutive start for Georgia State to become just the fifth player to do so. She has played  in 111 career games....Shay Rawls grabbed her 500th career rebound in today's game...The Panthers continued their trend of outscoring opponents in the second half with today's 37-31 margin, but the 10-point halftime deficit was too big to overcome.
