Williamsburg, Va. - Despite a triple-double from junior Ashley Jones, the Georgia State volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-14, 25-20, 21-25, 25-21) to William & Mary on Friday night at Kaplan Arena. It marked the third triple-double of the season for Jones.
The lost dropped Georgia State to 14-5 and 2-2 in the CAA. William & Mary improved to 10-7 and 3-1 in conference play.
Jones, who tied for the regular season national lead last season with six triple-doubles, scored her third with 16 kills, 15 assists and 10 digs. The San Diego native has just missed four other triple-doubles this season.
True freshman Jamiee Freeman grabbed a team-high 20 digs after scoring a career-high 31 against Hofstra last Sunday. The reigning CAA Defensive Player of the Week was held to just three kills.
Sophomore Muki Kangwa, who is among the top 20 in the NCAA in service aces per set, added three more on Friday night to go along with nine kills. Kangwa also added five total kills and eight digs for the Panthers.
Fellow sophomore Chelsea Perry scored 20 assists after setting a career-high of 38 in the Panthers last match.
Junior Rachel Boryc, who entered the match third on the team in kills, added eight with just two errors in the loss.
Redshirt-junior Audrey Cantrell scored 19 digs to move ahead of Molly Sapp (2000-03) for eighth on the all-time digs list. She is now just two shy of Lee Barnhill (1986-1989) for seventh all-time.
The Tribe was led by Lauren Powell's double-double of 17 kills and 17 digs, to go along with a .486 hitting percentage. Ginny Bray added 11 kills, while Lindsey Pflugner scored a match-high 34 digs.
William & Mary held the Panthers to a .083 hitting percentage, while hitting .264 and committing just 14 errors as compared to 32 for State.
The Panthers will return to action on Saturday night when they face VCU in Richmond. First serve is set for 7 p.m. VCU earned a 3-1 win over State last season, but the Panthers won both contests in 2007, including a 3-1 win at the Siegel Center in Richmond.
The Panthers next home match will come on October 16th as Towson travels to Atlanta. First serve is set for 5:30 p.m. and admission to the GSU Sports Arena is free of charge.
