The Georgia State volleyball team's seven-match winning streak was snapped by Northeastern on Friday night as the Huskies earned a 3-1 win (19-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-18) over the Panthers. Redshirt-sophomore Vineece Verdun led the Panther offense with 11 kills on just 21 attempts.
Georgia State fell to 13-4, 1-1 in CAA play on the season, while Northeastern improved to 8-7, 1-1 in the CAA.
The seven-match winning streak had been the longest since opening the 2003 season 8-0.
Junior Raquel Jones, who had seen limited action so far this season, scored a pair of back-to-back kills after a Panther timeout late in the first set to spark Georgia State to an opening set victory. Jones finished the match with three kills on four attempts.
Unfortunately, that would be the only set State would take as the Northeastern offense proved to be too much. The Huskies hit .206 for the match, including a .560 hitting percentage in the third set, while State, who was leading the CAA in hitting coming into the match, hit just .178.
Junior Ashley Jones finished the match with eight kills, 13 assists and nine digs, to fall just short of her third triple-double of the season.
Redshirt-junior Audrey Cantrell added 17 digs to move ahead of Bettina Schmidt (1991-94) for ninth on the all-time digs list. She is now just 28 shy of Molly Sapp (2000-03) for eighth on the list.
Senior Jocelyn Waldern scored eight kills and 11 digs, while sophomore Chelsea Perry finished with 20 assists.
Freshman Jamiee Freeman scored five kills and no errors, adding 14 digs for State.
The Panthers, who came into the match leading the nation in service aces per set, managed just six in the loss.
Northeastern was led by Jessica Tkachuk's triple-double of 11 kills, 20 assists and 10 digs. Caitlin Tittl added 13 kills, while Britney Brown scored 12 in the win.
The Panthers will return home on Sunday for a noon match as Hofstra comes to the GSU Sports Arena. Admission to all Georgia State volleyball matches is free of charge. Live stats and web-streaming of the match will be provided via GeorgiaStateSports.com.
