Volleyball Falls to Xavier in Three

The Georgia State volleyball dropped to 0-4 on the season with a 3-0 loss to Xavier (4-0) on Friday evening in the first match of the Regency Suites/Georgia Tech Classic at the O'Keefe Gymnasium. The Panthers were led by reigning CAA Rookie-of-the-Week, freshman Torrie Brown's nine kills.

Xavier started the first set on an 8-2 run before Head Coach Mike Webster called a timeout to collect the team. The Muskateers continued to build on their fast start, taking a 16-4 lead midway through the set. Sophomore Alysa Long attempted to spark a Panther comeback with a kill to cut the deficit to 11. That was followed by an ace by junior-college transfer Jessica Tjaden, which cut the lead to ten, but it would not be the spark State needed in the set, dropping it by a 13-point margin, 25-12.

The Panthers would come out swinging in set, taking an early 3-1 lead after an attack error by Xavier's Michelle Matia. The Muskateers would used a 10-4 run to build an 11-7 lead before Georgia State would mount a comeback of their own to take a 14-13 lead midway through the set. From that point through the end of the set, there would be five ties and five lead changes, as neither team built more than a two point advantage. State would take a 23-21 lead on a kill by senior Liz Schaab, but that would be the last point the Panthers would score in the set, as Xavier took set two, 25-23.

The two teams would exchange side-outs early in set three before Xavier would go on a 10-3 run to take a 13-7 lead. Webster would once again call a time-out to call the Panthers, but Xavier would continue to attack, building a 21-13 lead. State would not go down without a fight, going on a 7-3 run to cut the deficit to four led by a pair of back-to-back kills by Brown. A kill by Xavier's Shannon Voors would put an end to State's comeback, as the Muskateers won set three, 25-21.

Xavier was led by Otte's 10 kills and Claire Paszkiewicz's 29 assists.

Tjaden added 26 assists and three blocks for the Panthers, while junior Jocelyn Waldern added four.

State will return to the court on Saturday when the Panthers face #25 Michigan at 1:00 p.m. from the O'Keefe Coliseum on the campus of Georgia Tech.
