The Georgia State University volleyball team fell to first place Towson, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon. Playing without junior setter Jessica Tjaden due to an injury, the Panthers could never find their rhythm as the Tigers used their height to an advantage.
The Panthers (0-14, 0-2 CAA) would fall behind early in set one to Towson (13-4, 2-0 CAA), trailing 7-1 early in the set. On back-to-back-to-back kills by junior Jocelyn Waldern, freshman Muki Kangwa and senior Michelle Trimble, the Panthers would cut the deficit to 9-6. State would cut the deficit to two on a kill by senior Liz Schaab, as they trailed 11-9. However, the Panthers would never cut the deficit to less than a pair as the Tigers would go on a 10-1 run to finish the set, going up 1-0 in the match with a 25-14 win.
State would once again fall behind early in the second set, trailing 4-1, but on several Towson errors and a pair of kills by Trimble, the Panthers would tie the match 6-6 early in the set. The Tigers would use an 8-2 run to go up 14-8 before State would use a 4-1 run of their own, cutting the deficit to three at 15-12. However, the Tigers would once again finish the set off strong and use several Panthers errors to their advantage, taking the second 25-17.
Georgia State would come out firing in the third. After a kill by Towson's Maddie Haseltine put the Tigers up 1-0, the Panthers would go on a 4-0 run, capped by a kill by Waldern. State would fall behind, but on a Tiger error, would tie the match 9-9. Towson would once again use an extended run, this time 11-3, to take a commanding 20-12 third set lead. The Panthers would rally and cut the deficit to five on two occasions, but Towson would prove too strong, taking the third set 25-18.
The Panthers were led by Trimble's seven kills, while Schaab added six. Filling in for the injured Jessica Tjaden, sophomore Ashley Jones had 15 assists, while Audrey Cantrell had a team high 13 digs.
Towson would be led by Haseltine's 13 kills, while Katee Luecke added 29 assists. Missy Rohrbaugh added a team high 14 digs.
