Sophomore Apryl Goodwin scored the game-winning overtime goal and freshman Kellianne Collins registered her first career shutout to lead the Georgia State women's soccer team over in-state rival Georgia Southern 1-0.
Goodwin's goal is her fourth on the season. Collins played in support of sophomore Heidi Blankenship who was sidelined due to injury. The Panthers also competed without the services of forwards Kay Harbrueger and Kara Vezza who served a one-game suspension for red cards received versus Fairfield.
Apryl Goodwin managed to put Georgia Southern away with an overtime goal in the 100th minute. Goodwin turned the corner and, despite the goalkeeper getting a hand on the ball, was able to poke it through for the win. Georgia State improves to a school record start of 7-1-0.
Junior Virginia Wood made a possibly game-saving play in the first half, clearing a ball off the line to defer a Georgia Southern offensive attack. Southern looked to take advantage of the shorthanded Panthers, piling up several good scoring chances.
“Georgia Southern really took advantage of our lineup changes,” said Georgia State head coach Domenic Martelli. “We have become comfortable with that lineup and usually play to the strengths that it affords us.”
Kellianne Collins stepped up in a big way, making her first career start and coming away with the shutout. “Kellianne had a great save to open up the second half. She ended up with three big saves that kept us alive,” said Martelli.
The last two times the Panthers have travelled to Georgia Southern, Georgia State has eked out 1-0 victories. “They always play us tough when we come down here,” said Martelli. “Georgia Southern really gave us our money's worth.”
Harbrueger and Vezza return to the lineup Sunday as the Panthers host Mercer, the final contest before CAA competition begins. “We were able to call on a bunch of good players that came in and played very well for us,” said Martelli. “In the second half, our senior leadership really showed, and the defense was able to hold on until we could capitalize on a scoring chance. We definitely do not want to be put in the same situation again. Today was a really tough battle.”
On Sunday, Georgia State plays another in-state rival, the Mercer Bears. Kickoff is set, at Panthersville, for 1 p.m.
