Athens, GA ? The Georgia State volleyball team fell 3-0 to cross-town rival Georgia Tech on Sunday morning at the Georgia Bulldog Invitational. The Panthers (0-2) were led by freshman Torrie Brown's eight kills in the 25-20, 25-16, 25-18 scoring.
The Panthers started strong, controlling the first match midway though set one, leading 14-12. Brown had four kills for State. But an 8-2 run by the Yellow Jackets (2-0) put the Panthers in a deficit that they could not rebound from, as Tech won set one 25-20.
Tech opened the start of the second set outscoring Georgia State 10-4, but a 5-0 answering run by the Panthers culminated with a kill by sophomore Ashley Jones to cut the deficit to one at 10-9. The Yellow Jackets then used a 10-3 run to go up 20-12 and put the set out of reach for State, as the Panthers fell 25-16.
State came out strong to start the third set and took the lead 7-6 on a kill by senior Michelle Trimble. Tech used a 9-3 run to go up by five, before the Panthers used a run of their own to tie the score at 16 after an attack error by Tech. The Yellow Jackets went on a 5-0 run to put the set away, winning the set 25-18 and the match.
Georgia State got a match high 22 assists from newcomer Jessica Tjaden, while senior Liz Schaab had seven kills. Red-shirt sophomore Audrey Cantrell added a team high 11 digs.
Hunter Bailey and Alison Campbell led Georgia Tech with 13 kills apiece, while Callie Miller added 10. Mary Ashley Tippins added a team-high 33 assists.
Georgia State will return to the court on Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. against host Georgia.
